If you went to Texas A&M, you'll recognize this statute of Lawrence Sullivan “Sul” Ross. He was a past president in the late 1800's and was known for his Aggie spirit. That's where the tradition of placing a penny on the Sully statue began, as homage to Ross. Turns out the phrase "a penny for your thoughts" was an often-used phrase of his as it's said he'd often help students with their homework.
