I'm all about authenticity. Some people go through life with huge circles of friends and many nicknames, but not me. Only my two sisters called me Karenlou.

So my company, Karenlou Creates, reminds me each and every day, to remain humble, because life is precious, opportunities are gained and lost in the bat of an eye, and yet, we all deserve to have joy in our lives.

Techniques

I think of myself as an oil painter, but have recently moved into acrylics and web-based design. There's something so relaxing about working in oils, especially since I love texture and working with my palette knife. Acrylics dry so much faster, which brings its own nuance of allowing layer upon layer with just a little something popping through from a layer beneath. And technology, well I'm kinda geeky since much of the rest of my life is spent creating online learning technology.

Career Highlights

Way back in college I changed my major from Business Administration (yuck!) to Graphic Arts. While it certainly brought me a lot of joy, I didn't really move into oil painting until a few years ago. I've been blessed to be part of four brick and mortar gallery shows and look forward to more opportunities like that now that our lives are starting to open back up a bit, post-pandemic.
